Happy 1st Day of school lunch! I know it’s the beginning of July, but we thoroughly enjoyed our 1 week of summer vacation before the girls started up again on their year-round school schedule today! We’re on Track 3 so we get our next 3 week break in… 3 weeks! And yes, I love our year-round schedule. The girls each had a little homework assignment for their first day of school. Little Sis was to bring in her favorite book into her class. She chose Ferdinand.

Big Sis was to tell something interesting about herself. Here’s what she said: “I really want a pet but my parents won’t let me get one. So they got me this instead. Meet Mr. Thrifty. Sadly, he came with a broken arm.” For the record, she’s been really wanting a skeleton, don’t ask me why so while we were out and about on UNC Chapel Hill’s campus this weekend, we ran across this and got it for her. We told her she has to learn what the names of the bones are but she never did, lol.

Here’s that obligatory 1st day of school picture of my 4th and 1st graders ready for action with their Food Lion school supplies bags in hand. Scary how quickly time flies.

And here’s the girls’ lunch today. Nothing fancy, but it was per their request and as you can see, they loved it!

1st day of school lunch

In these lunches:

  1. Pizza: Arnold’s Sandwich Flat Rounds, Mama Mary’s Pizza Sauce and Trader Joe’s Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  2. Sunmaid Raisins
  3. Fresh Cherries, halved and pitted for Little Sis
  4. Homemade Nestle Tollhouse Cookie Bars

Each also got a bag of chips of their choosing but I realized afterwards that this lunch was a little on the light side. Though we usually save the veggie eating for dinner time, I started to sneak in a little bit of fresh/raw veggies here and there but I didn’t have any on hand (bad Mommy!) and I got a little lazy in coming up w/ a good replacement (bad Mommy!). Even Big Sis finshed every morsel as you can plainly see!

My day went quickly. Stuck to my vow to exercise and went out on a 36 minute run. Yippe for me! And is this a twist of fate or what that I happened to just run right over this funny sight during my run?!?! Of COURSE I had to take a picture of it to show my friend Kelly Lester of EasyLunchboxes, given her recent blog post about DIY HEALTHY Lunchables and did she have some fun w/ it! Look how awesome her caption is!!

1st day of school lunch
Make homemade Lunchables they won’t toss out!

Then it was 1st day of school lunch (and “drinks”) w/ my neighbor buddy. Piddled around on Facebook and my blog, made a couple beds and emptied the dishwasher and before I knew it, *POOF* it was time to go pick the girls up from school! Time to get back into the daily grind as the girls practiced piano for their lessons tomorrow and did some homework. Big Sis already had some right off the bat (as did I w/ all that paperwork to fill out!) but Little Sis just read to her doggie pals.

Looking forward to what will hopefully be another great year of school for these girls. Now you go and enjoy the rest of your summer for me, ok?

Thanks so much for stopping by! Feel free to make my day by leaving me a comment, following my blog via email, on Facebook or on Instagram. The more the merrier!

Cute lunch box! I've been wondering about doing a lunchable style pizza. And that luncable or trashable pic is too funny! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much Bethany! YEah, like I mentioned in an earlier comment, they don't seem to appealing to me – I like my cheese melted on my pizzas, but the girls just totally go nuts for these and gobble them up, so I just keep on makin' 'em. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

We are just starting on Lunchables (my son is 20m). After eating them twice they were thrown on the floor. Sigh! Love the DIY! Will have to checkout the lunchboxes to make it more fun.

Yay to him throwing Lunchables on the floor. My guess (and hope) i that he'll like the homemade ones better. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Scarlett!

The year round thing is neat, actually. Is it based on the state you're in? Anyways, great lunch post.. love the before and after pictures (and the trashables rocks)!

It is pretty neat. It's actually based on county. I don't think most counties here offer year-round but because growth in my county has been crazy over the past decade, plus, they went to it to help relieve over-crowding w/o having to build more schools. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for stopping by, Sarah! 🙂

We love our Easy Lunchboxes too! I really need to replace them this year…how lids get lost is beyond me! I've heard other people say that they loved the year round school year too. It's not offered where we live. Which btw is Eastern NC! Go UNC 🙂 My son is also allergic to nuts, and will start Kindergarten in the Fall, so I'm a little nervous! Thanks for stopping by Makin' it Mo'Betta!

What's not to love about ELBs, right? 😉 LOL about those lids (and sorry, too). Good luck w/ sending your little one off to school! I was pretty nervous myself when I sent Big Sis off to Kindergarten, but relaxed SO much once I saw how seriously they took food allergies and her school and how wonderful everyone was. Whew! I wish you the same kind of experience!

Love that skeleton! Mr. thrifty! So cool! And like I said on Facebook…so jealous! I really think year round school is such a great thing. It's a shame more school districts don't do it. They know for a fact that kids lose a lot of their learning over the long summer…oh well. As for the lunch: love the sandwich flats as pizza crust. Fabulous idea! Gonna have to steal it for my kids first day of school…on August 12. Tick. Tock

Thanks Erin! I have to admit, Pizza Lunchables never seemed very appealing to me, store-bought or homemade! I like my pizza w/ MELTED cheese, cold or not. But somehow these girls are just crazy about 'em so I keep makin' 'em! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by girlfriend! 🙂
