My Handcrafted Adventures

cloth face masks

Hi there! I’m Christine and I started making cloth face masks back in March when this whole pandemic mess started. I’m on Wake Med Hospital’s list of community sewing volunteers and they asked us for mask donations. I put the utmost care and research into perfecting this pattern and making these masks. Since then, I’ve been making them non-stop to donate to other groups as well. Dentist and doctors’ offices, Dorcas Ministries, nursing homes, teachers and NC Face Mask Warriors are some of the places I donated to. Then I started selling them along the way, too, to help with my donation costs.

After the holidays, I’ll be done making masks, for the most part, and move on to other endeavors like learning Python to get a real job! But it’s been fun to see my friends during pick ups and catching up with so many of you in person or online during the pandemic! Thank you for all the support. You guys are amazing!

To date, I’ve made over 1300 and donated/given over 600. I can’t believe the $150 Kenmore sewing machine I bought right out of college 25+ years ago has kept up through all this, but I’ve never oiled it and vacuumed it so much as I have this year! Anyway, we’re still not through this Covid thing but there IS a light at the end of this long tunnel! Please stay safe and healthy through these upcoming winter months and let’s help keep each other safe!

Click on the pictures below to get a closer look. Sorry, the masks are no longer in order by design number. Instead, I’ve decided to group them by pattern for easier browsing.

Be sure to scroll to the BOTTOM of this post for the ORDER FORM and to read COMMENTS/REVIEWS from my many happy customers. And by all means, feel free to add your own! 🙂

Here are some pictures to show you how they fit. Click on the images for a closer look.

To illustrate how to use round paper coffee filters for additional mask filtering should you decide you need a little extra protection. refer to the steps below. While the added protection is nice, it does make it a bit harder to breathe.

Please be aware that patterns may vary depending the on the cut of fabric. Lastly, while all liners are 100% cotton, they differ slightly by color and texture depending on the fabric I had available.

Below is some information about my handmade cloth face masks but feel free to ask me any questions in the form below and BE SURE TO SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM of this post to read COMMENTS/REVIEWS from my many happy customers. And by all means, feel free to add your own! 🙂

These cloth face masks are/have:

  • ~ 3.5″ x 7″ pleated (~7″ x 7″ open)
I can make children’s sizes as well: (~7″ x 6″ open). Any design can be made into a kiddie size.
  • 100% cotton. Both layers are 100% cotton. The liner is made from a 300-count flat sheet that is soft to the touch. The outer layer is made from quilters’ cotton that is typically ~150-180 thread count. Some of the masks are made with two 300-count layers: Denim, Black, Blue & white stripes and Burnt orange.
  • A pocket for additional filter insert: coffee filter, paper towel, or roughly 5” x 5” square cut from an unused t-shirt.
  • Adjustable Ear Straps: Be sure to adjust them to fit you well. If the elastic is too stiff or still a little too tight, give it a few stretches while holding it at the base where it attaches to the mask.
  • Removable/replaceable nose bridge wire: To remove, just slip it through the gap or long stitch along the face-side topstitching. It can be replaced with 6” of floral wire, a pipe cleaner, long twist tie with the ends curled or bent in, so it doesn’t poke you or through the fabric. You can also use a straightened bobby pin or paperclip.
  • Care: Machine wash in warm/hot water using mild detergent and machine dry or hang. You can remove the nose wire before washing (for longevity) but it’s fine if you chose to leave them in. Be sure to wash those hands after!

I love your masks. I bought 2 at DJ’s Pharmacy in Cary, NC. I noticed several Michigan masks. Since I went to The Ohio State University, I was wondering if you could make me an OSU mask? Best, Alison Dyer

Hi Alison! Thank you so much for your kind words. It makes me so happy you like my masks! I might be able to make you an osu mask even though it goes my grain – haha. Let me look around to see if I can find any fabric locally and will let you know! And sorry it took so long to respond. It seems as though I don’t get notifications of comments that need to be moderated!

The masks from My Handcrafted Adventures are great! I work for a builder and interact with lots of people. I am always reaching for these double layer masks before meetings! They are fashionable, as well as safe. As a glasses wearer, being able to fit the mask edges and wire nose piece to my face; prevents foggy lenses.

We absolutely love these masks! I’ve lost count at how many we have. So many fun prints to choose from. Love the double layers with the option of adding a filter for extra protection for when I’m at work. Love the adjustable straps, for a more secure fit. My daughter was able to pick out the fabric designs she liked. Christine then went above and beyond to custom fit my daughter’s smaller face. Definitely will be ordering more soon!

These are the best masks I have purchased during this pandemic! Many are too small, too loose or too thin! I love that these masks have easily adjustable straps and nose bridge wire. They help customize the fit and make wearing them much more comfortable. And the option to add a filter in the pocket is comforting! The size is adjustable for my family. Leaving it pleated works for a smaller fit, while opening the pleats adds full coverage. And, I can talk in them without having to continuously cover my nose!

Without a doubt, these are the best masks that I’ve bought during the pandemic. They are comfortable to wear, adjustable, and the extra pocket space to add an inner lining works perfect. My wife and daughter love the patterns — and I appreciate the solids!

Really well and truly worth every dime that I’ve paid for them.

    Give ’em a whirl!

We are loving our masks! There are so many different patterns to choose from; something for everyone in the family.
My favorite features are the easily adjustable straps and nose bridge wire. They help individualize the fit and make wearing them much more comfortable. And the option to add an additional layer in the pocket is reassuring, especially in light of school going back in session. Super happy with the masks and actually think of them now as accessories to match my outfits! 🙂

My most favorite mask ever! I’ve bought so many masks and I’ve hated all of them. Then I decided to support my friend. She had tar heel masks and well I am a sucker for anything Carolina and she had such cool patterns. After I received them in the mail and wore one. Well I placed another order and then another order! They are the most comfortable masks and the patterns are beautiful! I highly recommend these!

I love these masks!!!! I have at least 15 different styles (probably more, I’ve lost count 😁). I buy more every time she posts new styles. Now that there are matching scrunchies, I know I will be buying those for my daughter as well. I can’t wait for the winter holiday styles. They are machine washable and hold up after many washes. I get tons of compliments when I wear them. It’s fun to be stylish and safe at the same time.

Yes, the pandemic stinks! But everyday I get to choose my fashion statement. Christine’s masks put the fun in functional!!! 2 layers for necessary protection and a extra pocket for a filter when I’m feeling extra vulnerable around folks. They hold up in the weekly wash and are comfortable to wear all day! We’ve purchased over 40 masks for our family. This provides plenty of options for us so Dad doesn’t get stuck wearing the pink gingham mask at the end of the week. #wearadamnmask

These masks are great. They’ve been durable and are keeping us safe. I like the pocket for extra protection when you need it and the removable nose wire is clever. And on top of it all, they are stylish – in our family we have five or six styles and we are all looking sharp!
