DIY Cereal Box Drawer Organizers

One of the first (and I’m not sure why it feels like ONLY) organizing projects I undertook the first week Little Sis, my youngest, went of to join Big Sis in elementary school was to tackle my messy kitchen drawers. The hubby had been grumbling about them quite a bit, so I decided it was finally time.

I was inspired by a pin I found on Pinterest last year that used cereal boxes and wrapping paper to make desk organizers: The Stonybrook House Messy Desk Post. I had never seen such a thing and thought it was utter brilliance! Thank you thank you thank you Lori of Stonybrook House for this fabulous idea! Be sure to check out her post as her tutorial is wonderful! Not only was I saving a ton of money, I was also helping out the environment in a teeny tiny way by not buying more plastic stuff and reusing cardboard boxes (though they would have been recycled otherwise). Well, I did end up using contact paper instead of wrapping paper since these were for kitchen-use which meant there’s a possibility of them getting wet, so they weren’t as ‘green’ as wrapping paper, but I like I said, teeny tiny way.

I have a before pic of one drawer. Unfortunately, I was so eagar and didn’t get a picture of the second drawer. oh well. There’s no way I’m dumping them out to get that pic. haha! And sorry my pix are kinda dark. These were taken last year sometime on my old camera phone that started go crazy on me, before I got my new phone.

First you have to configure which boxes you want to go where and cut them down to the right height to fit your drawers. Then I started to cover the boxes with contact paper.

Here I’ll show you two collages of 2 different boxes I covered. I did things a little differently from the Pinterest post and covered each individual box before attaching them together. It was way more time-consuming and took more contact paper (sorry Mother Earth!) but that left me more flexibility, in case I ever wanted to re-configure them.   Box 1:

The scraps. I actually saved them and stuck ’em on the peeled off backs from the contact paper to use to attached the covered boxes together and to use to cover the bottoms of other boxes.

Voila! The finished product for one drawer. It fit just PERFECTLY in my drawer without so much as an centimeter of wasted drawer space. Sweet!

And of course a pic of BOTH of my newly organized kitchen drawers! I LOVE THEM!

Hope yours turn out great, too! 🙂

Oh yeah, and this is why I have trouble throwing any boxes away now – my poor husband! 🙂

Thank you for using "voila" correctly, and not just typing "wallah!" 😉

    Plus, you know. Great idea!

I'm visiting from All Things Pretty. This is exactly what I need! I have been looking for organizers for my big utensils and haven't found any. I'll just use your idea and make my own!
